What happens when you accidently leave curry in the oven ALL DAY?

Today, we had some diced meat that needed using, so I thought I would document how quick and easy it is to cook for free in the Aussie Edition Sun Oven® (a product we sell and distribute here)

Unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan…as per normal 😝

First off, the ‘recipe’ which for this one was mainly just pre- purchased sauces to make it as quick and easy as possible. The below is not an endorsement for specific brands, (though we do use and recommend a lot of Melrose products)

Ingredients:

Approx 2kg of beef.

2 different old curry powders (one Meat Masala, one unknown)

2 sachets of Korma sauce

Coconut Oil

Method:

1) Dice the meat (our 10 year old likes to do this)

2) Add the spices

3) Brown the Meat* (not essential) As my wife is Malaysian / Sri Lankan descent, she likes to brown the meat first (and alter every recipe or sauce 🤣).

4) Put in a covered pot and cover with the sauce.

5) Place in the Sun Oven.

6) Enjoy!

Here’s how it went:

Add the spices:

Brown the meat (optional)

Pour the simmer sauce over the meat in the pot and cover.

The above photo was taken at 9:30am as I put the dish into the Sun Oven. I planned to take it out after an hour or two, but, as per usual, I got distracted with other things and totally forgot about it…

On this 40℃ day in full sun, I didn’t think about it again until 12:30 – a full 3 hours of cooking without stirring 😩

Had it been in a gas / electric oven, the dish would have been totally ruined.

However, in the Sun Oven it still looked ok other than a couple of pieces of meat that were a little dry:

As we weren’t going to eat it for lunch, I left the dish in the Sun Oven and closed the reflectors so it was no longer heating up.

I went in to have lunch, then totally forget about it again until 5:30pm 😬. Too late now – but my wife put on some rice while I cooked some Rotis (Paratha) to go with what I thought would be a burnt offering.

I went out to get the curry about 6pm, expecting it to be cold, burnt and dry. But at least we have food right?!

However, far from my expectation, the dish looked amazing and was still piping hot!

AMAZING!

We added some home grown super hot chilli (Weapon X for the chilli heads among you) and some fresh coriander.

We sat outside enjoying each other, the children playing, the sunset and a fantastic meal. So, so much to be thankful for!

The children all ate some and there’ll be enough for at least one more meal too. All for about 20 minutes time outlay and no electricity / gas cost!

Of course the added benefits of better nutrition, succulent meat and no extra heat inside the house are welcome too!

Even after years of similar experiences, I am still surprised at how forgiving and rewarding solar cooking is in the Sun Oven is.

So good, you could easily be fooled into thinking I was a good cook ! 😂

Here’s to God’s provision, amazing people and an easy to use cooking device!

Please note: the Roti was not cooked in the Sun Oven.

Full Disclosure: We sell and distribute the Sun Oven® in Australia. Any sales from links or products may benefit us directly. Well at least until we are led to someone else who needs it more 😜
