The photo of this delicate set does not do it justice – one of our cutest sets…
The fact that all the characters are children, reminds us that all the people in the scene (and us as observers) are all God’s children.
It also captures what Jesus focus is: children!
While the adults were concerned with ‘important things’ Jesus directed their attention back to what was valuable: “let the children come to Me!”.
We have set up this set in front of our largest set, meaning it actually takes effort to not get distracted by the larger, more colourful backdrop. And so it is with children and life: it is so easy to allow our career, goals, empire, finances, deadlines etc to get in the way of what is important: our children!
It takes concerted effort to invest in the precious ones in our lives: and time in our culture is the valued currency. Something that God has for us no matter ho busy we are: time!
The figures are quite detailed for a China set – the colouring is very simple. Almost plain looking in colour – they are totally white apart from gold accents. The gold highlights something in each figure, and for some it is very little. To me this represents the fact that we have *so* little to offer the King of Creation – but He revels in it anyway!
I also love how there are only two Magi (wise men), but still 3 gifts, just to remind us that the inconsequential details are not really vital, but the main principles remain of utmost importance. The fact that there are two shepherds, agains highlights the fact that Jesus cares as much for the poor as the rich…thankfully!
The faces of these little children are so peaceful – yet reverent: an appropriate reaction to being in the presence of the King.
May we as Jesus said “have the faith of these children” and give true worship to King Jesus this season!
