So our local community association was having a small competition for gate decorations this Christmas. We thought what better way to spread the message & love of Jesus than some fun decorations?!
Funnily enough, the day before we started the decorations we were asked by the committee to be the judges for the sub division. A quick family vote and we decided to forgo the chance for the prize and judge the gates – but we would still decorate…
While at the shops we bought some lights that were cheap, then my father in law mentioned he was going to get rid of his so we ended up with quite a few…

While at the shops we bought some lights that were cheap, then my father in law mentioned he was going to get rid of his so we ended up with quite a few…
The main aim was to have a “Happy Birthday’ sign, so designed up something on the computer to get the proportions and letter sizing.
We used some thin ply wood, printed the letters and cut them out, positioned them on coloured paper then laminated them…
Next came the lights around the edge and the black crayon ‘JESUS’ – we all took a letter and got to it…
Lastly, a scripture verse of sorts was printed and laminated…
Finished sign:
Not bad!!
Next we make up a cross from some scrap RHS and patio tubing and added some rope lights – white around the cross and then red to symbolise blood:
It was evident the word ‘Jesus’ was starting to form with the red lights (if you have a good imagination!) so we changed it a bit, and started adding lights to the water tank, trees, black boys etc:
The photos hardly do it justice…but gives you an idea
The cross is the first this you see when you turn into our street!
From further away:
Later, we added a stable & star to the roof in the background, again hard to see in the photo but it all adds to the depth!
All in all a fairly good first attempt (in our opinion anyway!!).
Lot’s more to do next year….stay tuned!
We hope you have a safe and peace-filled Jesus’ birthday!
