The last few days I have had some amazing conversations at the gate. (I just posted a couple on our blog for those interested or who have the desire to pray).
But one thing I am often amazed at is how people are used to their creature comforts… And if something goes wrong that threatens or takes away said comfort? The reaction is, well, eye opening! As humans, we get used to things that were once a special treat, then we come to expect them and are discontent if we don’t have them… it’s crazy, but unfortunately it happens quickly often without us noticing.
It leads to a life far from fulfilled and content…but compare that with someone I often admire: my wife Sharmini Keegan.
Many of you will know that she lived in caravans in the middle of nowhere for years – no internet, no running water, no electricity, no toilet – not even phone coverage! Stinking hot, freezing cold, isolated, tick infested, snake invaded and the bees? They were in plague proportions.
Some of the harshest conditions, definitely not expected in a civilised country. There were incredible challenges and hardships – but when I look back, I see what God did in our lives and some others who benefitted from what we were doing out there.
However, over the last year, 15+ years of sacrifice and hard work has started to culminate into a large, comfortable house. It stays fairly cool in summer (especially compared to a caravan 😅) and warm in winter. It even has hot running water (most days!), so life in some areas has gotten much easier.
It would be totally expected if Sharmini had a hard time with what she was faced with today. And yesterday. Even if she was angry – it would be understandable.
Or at the very least she could at least just cancel her commitment?
But no – her reaction?:
She comes to me and simply asks me to fill up a spray bottle that she can take with her.
You see, she is volunteering / helping lead a Bible study – something she sees of great (and Eternal) benefit for those who attend. Part of leadership is training and learning new skills – and some has included travelling to Perth. And, not ‘just’ accepting the new role, sacrificing even further for sake of others and their relationships.
The problem is, just before Christmas, the air cond in the little car we got her has given out and it is not a cheap fix. We never expected it to have to be used over the hotter months.
But, 40º+ days, no hesitation – she keeps her commitments. Her own discomfort is less important than what it means for others, so off she goes.
Well at least today, she had the added ‘comfort’ of a spray bottle. 🎉
If you are reading this honey – you are amazing. I love your resolve to serve our God and put others first. It is an incredible example and encouragement for our kids and it challenges me. I am proud of who you are and I know that every little bit of effort and sacrifice will be used for His purpose in the lives of those who benefit.*
I know if I say ‘you deserve air cond’ you will say… ’nope I deserve hell!’ and I agree (not just for you but! 🤣). But I will say I do want you to be in more comfort than a 50º sweaty car when you are driving so far for others. I will work towards it.
But in the meantime, please know that God is smiling down on you, while the kids & myself are looking up to you.
I love you, amazing woman, thank you for being you and being willing to be used by Him for the benefit of others. It is a reflection of the amazing God we serve. And your amazing character. I am so happy that the people you are surrounded with now are genuine, God fearing and loving people who are genuinely thankful and not just using you. I am grateful.
May He continue to lead, guide, strengthen and reward you. And keep you cool!
😘
